KNOWING the job so well that they can do it blindfold isn’t just a turn of phrase for Lincoln couple Ann Nash and Brian Lamyman.
Both clairvoyant mediums and spiritual healers, they can quite literally work in the dark – relying on their unwavering faith in the power of Spirit to channel messages from another dimension.
They hit upon the idea of blindfolding themselves – but took it even further. Unlike other mediums who rely on being able to hear the subject’s voice, Ann and Brian also shun voice contact.
“It started as an experiment,” said Brian , “We used to ask how we could really be sure the messages were coming from Spirit – that we were not ‘reading’ the person.
“We decided that, if we were blindfolded, we couldn’t pick up body language or facial expressions. We don’t know who’s in the room, or who the message is for – they could be male or female, young or old.
“Anyone can tell an elderly woman that her mother has passed into spirit and is coming through. We wanted to do more than that, and give proof that what we were hearing was purely from Spirit.
“Ann told me to put on earphones and a blindfold, and at a set time she would bring a third person to the house. I didn’t know who that person was. She told me to tune into Spirit, and the information I gave turned out to be true and correct.
“What I didn’t know was that she had brought two people in. I got messages for both of them, and what I was given was right in both cases. The only voice I heard was the voice of Spirit.”
After trying out the technique a few more times at home, Ann and Brian began demonstrating blindfold mediumship in public.
“No-one had seen it done like that before,” said Ann, “There are other mediums who use blindfolds, but they need the voice to tune into the vibrations of their subject.
“We’ve proved it can be done without sight and without voice. We actually find it easier – we’re not distracted by how the person looks, or by facial expressions. Others have tried to do the same thing and have found it doesn’t work for them, but it works for us.”
Both have known since childhood that they could see Spirit; Ann had an imaginary friend and Brian was aware of spirit people standing at the foot of his bed. “It happened night after night,” he recalled. “I shared a bedroom with my brother and we would take it in turns to stay awake and keep watch. It frightened us at the time.”
Ann closed down her psychic abilities at the age of eight, when her five-year-old niece died of a heart condition. “I told my mum she was in a better place, free of pain, and was happy,” she said. “I really got scolded, so I stopped saying anything in case I got into trouble.”
Brian, on the other hand, began to step into his abilities as a schoolboy in Sleaford, where he attended the local Spiritualist Church. After a gap, during which he travelled the world in the Navy, he met a group of church members who invited him back.
An experienced medium took him under her wing and helped him develop as a channel. They began leading services together until Brian’s first solo appearance at Newark. Both he and Ann are now in huge demand to work churches across the country.
They are now planning to offer private readings and workshops to help others develop spiritually. They already hold weekly development evenings at their home, where demand is so great they are rapidly outgrowing the available space in their neat bungalow. “We’re looking at hiring a hall to meet the demand,” said Brian.
“We want to pass on the knowledge we have,” said Ann. “People have to sift out what they can accept from what they can’t, and go for what feels right for them. People still make their own choices and decisions on their own path.”
Added Brian: “At the end of the day, you will be put where Spirit wants you to go, to do the work you are meant to do. If you want to be a channel, you have to go where Spirit takes you.”
